Unique challenges solved by mobile
Slush 2013 had an impressive line-up of speakers, but at close to 200 different events spead over five venues, shaping your individual conference agenda could have proven difficult. Also with over 5000 techy people crammed into a single building, constant data coverage is less than guaranteed. Luckily the apps solved these challenges with their constantly up-to-date, yet off-line friendly, information with efficient browsing of all the events, building your schedule and getting notified upon start of the program.
The app also contained a fully-featured Twitter client for following the buzz around #slush13, real-time news, maps and a live-chat powered by our friends at Ninchat. All this functionality was brought to life by Qvik’s signature design and UX. Fluid animations and small details paired with powerful functionality catapulted the app to the top of the lifestyle category on the Finnish App Store and all the way to the #5 spot on the overall list.
We created a small teaser video covering the app. Check it out here.
The whole audience is listening
Overall, the apps on different platforms netted a nice amount of downloads. The iOS app was downloaded 2500 times with Android and Windows Phone versions serving close to 1000 downloads each. (While Qvik does provide first-class Windows Phone design and development, this version was built by another Slush collaborator Teemu Tapanila from AppCampus due to scheduling challenges). Both the iOS and Android apps currently have a resounding 5 star review average. Given the conference was attended by roughly 5000 people, the reach of the apps with their close to 4500 downloads was likely record shattering!
The social media buzz around the app was strong with a number of tweets and comments on the Live Chat. Most importantly, all of it was highly positive! Here’s a sampling of our favorites.
An app is meant to be used, and it’s not just the download numbers that count. Happily the analytics data shows strong use for the apps. The iOS app was used on average for 25 minutes per download or 1000 hours combined. This is a rather healthy number for a two-day event. Also the speaker information was in heavy use with 70 000 speaker detail pages read.
Slick design and a freebie!

We at Slush work tirelessly to provide a first-class experience for our attendees. […] Our visual and functional mobile apps are an important part of creating this experience.

The app was designed to showcase Finnish mobile talent matching the prestige of Slush as an industry leading event. That’s why we at Qvik went at times to extremes in polishing details – from tilt-sensitive side menu to parallax animations on most scrolling content. We got such positive feedback on the tilt feature that we decided to publish the code under MIT license for free. You can grab your copy here and start crafting your own iOS7-styled accelerometer based effects. If you want to show your appreciation, you can follow us on LinkedIn or Twitter! (@qvik and @evp)
Qvik has a over a five-year long track record of building the best apps on iOS, Android, Windows Phone and HTML5. With over 120 services delivered in other categories, we are also the premier provider of high quality mobile conference apps in Finland. Our other work includes the iPhone + iPad native app for Nordic Business Forum 2013. We can’t wait for next year to one-up this year’s app for Slush!
I’d also like to give a very special thank you to everyone who helped make it happen:
