Smoother authentication drives daily use of the My Evli app

Turning My Evli into an everyday investing tool

Evli is one of the leading asset managers and fund companies in the Nordics, with more than 40 years of helping clients grow long-term wealth. One part of their service is the My Evli application, where their clients easily can invest and track their investments.

When Evli wanted to upgrade authentication in My Evli, Qvik helped them choose the right method, implement it, and audit the accessibility of their wider digital services. The new solution lets users sign in and confirm transactions with a PIN or biometrics, turning an occasional check-in into a tool clients reach for daily.

After the first login users can authenticate and confirm purchases in app using biometric authentication or PIN code.

A digital companion to personal service

Smooth authentication is the foundation of any mobile financial service. When signing in is effortless, the barrier to use drops, for returning customers and newcomers alike.

"Evli's number one job is to fulfil the client's investment objectives. That's primarily the asset manager's role, but we've now integrated the digital channel much more closely with our personal service," says Jarkko Kuisma, Director of Client Experience at Evli. "Anyone who can use a smartphone understands the new authentication intuitively."

Before the update, My Evli was largely a portfolio-monitoring app.

"This isn't a replacement for personal service. It's a digital companion that supports the asset manager, who walks the client through the app in a safe environment."

App-based solution guarantees security

App-based authentication can be tied to a specific device and individual user. The first time a client signs in, they verify their identity with Evli's credentials or their bank's. From then on, a PIN or biometric scan is enough to authenticate and approve transactions. For web logins, the app verifies identity through a QR code.

"We sat down with Evli and worked through how authentication needed to be implemented from a technical standpoint," says Lari Tuominen, CEO at Qvik. "We built a solution that lives inside My Evli, no bouncing the user out to their online bank, using Signicat's MobileID, which offers the simplest, fastest user path on the market."

Signicat MobileID provides audited, bank-grade security: stored data, communications, and the device itself are all protected, and the system can detect tampered devices. It helps companies move beyond passwords without sacrificing user experience.

The My Evli team chose native implementations for iOS and Android. The advantages of a native solution are convenient updates through the app store, as well as diverse options for using push messages and biometrics.

"A service like My Evli needs to be one hundred percent sure the user knows what they're doing – and is who they say they are."

Our collaboration with Evli

Choosing the right partner is one of the most important decisions in any digital project. Qvik stood out by being direct, putting itself in Evli's shoes, and weighing options from Evli's perspective rather than its own.

"In-house expertise is vital, and I always want Evli's own team to grow and pick up new skills. But the next most important thing is the right partner," Kuisma says. "Lari made a great first impression – relaxed, but you could tell straight away he knew his stuff."

Evli weighed two realistic paths: build their own authentication solution, or adopt one off the shelf. Once Signicat MobileID was selected, the project moved quickly. As a final step, a third party audited the app's information security before launch.

"I hope and believe the Qvik team also picked up something from us, about the industry for instance."

“Qvik talked straight and gave us just the right amount of sparring. They gave us room to think, but also told us what they thought and kept the project moving.”

Accessibility built in

The My Evli app has a native login implementation, after which the application switches to a website-based solution. Qvik also improved the accessibility of Evli’s digital services based on a comprehensive audit.

My Evli uses native authentication, after which the app hands off to a web-based experience. Alongside the auth work, Qvik conducted a full accessibility audit of Evli's digital services and implemented the resulting improvements, making the app simpler to use and tidying up its underlying technical structure in the process.

“The new My Evli is a genuinely easy-to-use, informative, modern interface. A huge improvement on what we had.”
Jarkko Kuisma, Director of Client Experience at Evli
